Echoes of Old Shanghai: A Multisensory Tribute to Zhou Xuan

Set in the heart of Singapore’s luxury shopping district, NEIMASITAWI Concept designed an immersive event for the upscale Shanghainese restaurant Yan’s Dining, that bridged memory, music, fashion, and gastronomy. Marking 100 years since the passing of legendary 1930s jazz singer Zhou Xuan, the inauguration paid homage to an era when Shanghai stood at the crux of modernity, elegance, and cultural experimentation.

The evening unfolded as a lively scene in old Shanghai. A carefully curated selection of Zhou Xuan’s songs formed the emotional backbone of the experience, each track interpreted by a renowned chef through bespoke dishes inspired by melody, mood, and lyrical nuance. Each dish was explained on discs designed to resemble vintage vinyl records, printed with the song lyrics associated with each creation—blurring the boundaries between sound, taste, and nostalgia.

The space itself became a layered narrative. Walls were adorned with original 1930s-style posters featuring glamorous Shanghainese singers and models, alongside contemporary calligraphy commissioned from local modern calligraphers. Interwoven into the setting were archival fashion pieces from Sitawi’s previous life as a fashion designer—garments born from her years living in Shanghai and infused with personal history. Models moved through the room wearing traditional qipao dresses created in collaboration with Shanghai-based designer Lily Chen, embodying the enduring grace of the era.

More than an event, the inauguration was conceived as a total artwork; an immersive, multi-sensory tribute that celebrated Zhou Xuan’s legacy while reimagining 1930s Shanghai through a contemporary lens.

Nel cuore del quartiere dello shopping di lusso di Singapore, NEIMASITAWI Concept ha creato un evento immersivo per l'elegante ristorante shanghainese Yan's Dining, intrecciando memoria, musica, moda e gastronomia. In occasione del centenario dalla scomparsa della leggendaria cantante jazz degli anni '30 Zhou Xuan, l'inaugurazione ha reso omaggio a un'epoca in cui Shanghai si trovava al centro di modernità, eleganza e sperimentazione culturale.

La serata si è svolta come una scena vivace della vecchia Shanghai. Una selezione accurata di canzoni di Zhou Xuan ha costituito l'anima emotiva dell'esperienza: ogni brano è stato interpretato da un rinomato chef attraverso piatti creati su misura, ispirati alla melodia, all'atmosfera e alle sfumature dei testi. Ogni portata era accompagnata da dischi progettati per ricordare i vecchi vinili, stampati con i testi delle canzoni associate a ogni creazione—sfumando i confini tra suono, gusto e nostalgia.

Lo spazio stesso è diventato una narrazione stratificata. Le pareti erano decorate con manifesti originali in stile anni '30 raffiguranti affascinanti cantanti e modelle shanghaiesi, accanto a calligrafie contemporanee commissionate a calligrafi moderni locali. Intrecciati nell'allestimento c'erano pezzi d'archivio della vita precedente di Sitawi come stilista—capi nati dai suoi anni vissuti a Shanghai e intrisi di storia personale. Le modelle si muovevano nella sala indossando abiti tradizionali qipao creati in collaborazione con la designer di Shanghai Lily Chen, incarnando la grazia senza tempo di quell'epoca.

Più che un evento, l'inaugurazione è stata concepita come un'opera d'arte totale: un tributo immersivo e multisensoriale che ha celebratol'eredità di Zhou Xuan rinnovando la Shanghai degli anni '30 attraverso uno sguardo contemporaneo.
